Apple Yum Dip

After many years growing up craving this dip (which I only ever enjoyed on trips to my paternal Grandparents’ house, and which I always imagined was a complicated recipe only Grandmothers knew) I finally asked for the recipe once I had become an adult. It is still awesome, but it is neither a complicated recipe nor a recipe only Grandmothers know–turns out my aunt Margaret had been the first to discover the combination. We never knew what it was called, so the cousins always called it variations on “Apple Yummy” or “Yummyness Dip”. I can’t get myself to call something “Yummy” so I’m abbreviating it here to “Yum.”

This caramel-y dip works best with crisp green apple slices, but is delicious with lots of other dip-able items as well.
Ingredients
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Allow the cream cheese to soften to room temperature in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Break up any lumps in the brown sugar, and pour into the cream cheese.
  3. Add the vanilla extract.
  4. Stir with a fork or a hand blender until homogeneous and smooth. If necessary, microwave at very low power for a few seconds to bring the dip to a consistency that will allow the ingredients to blend and the sugar to dissolve.
  5. Serve with green apples or other treats, as a dessert or an appetizer.
